Frequently Asked Questions

What does a chiropodist do?

A chiropodist/podiatrist will assess, diagnose and treat conditions of the lower limb and foot and then evaluate the care given. They treat patients of all ages especially patients who suffer with diabetes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and peripheral neuropathy. The aim of the treatment is to relieve pain and improve quality of life by keeping people mobile and independent. They treat conditions such as:

  • Fungal nail infections
  • Athletes foot
  • Ingrown toe nails
  • Cracked heels
  • Hard skin
  • Chilblains
  • Thick nails
  • Painful heels
  • Bunions
  • Corns
  • Fissures
  • Arch pain
  • Metatarsal pain
  • Hammer toes

What is the difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist?

There is no difference between the two names given to a professional who treats people with lower leg and foot problems. Originally the term podiatry was used mainly in America, but has filtered over here into Britain. Chiropody used to refer to the treatment of feet and hands, but chiropodists today only deal with foot problems. In the UK it is an interchangeable term used, and can confuse people along with thinking a chiropodist is the same as a chiropractor.

What is a Foot Health Practitioner?

Someone who has not had a full 3 year training course and is not registered with the HCPC and because of this they cannot use the term “chiropodist” or “podiatrist”

How do I know who to use?

Its best to check the HCPC (Health Professional Council) register. This is the regulatory body for Chiropodist (and other professionals), to ensure that each professional meets the minimum standard and audits their Continual Professional Development (CPD). You can check the HCPC register by going to www.hpc-uk.org

Why do diabetics need to see a chiropodist/podiatrist?

Diabetics can be prone to peripheral neuropathy (loss of sensation in the extremities) especially if their blood sugars are unstable, and diabetics with reduced sensation will be unaware of actual and potential problems going on with their feet, hence having the eyes of a professional is imperative.
